Profile: John Carroll

Personal background
I am originally from S. Cal. and have been living in Arizona for the past 6.5 years. I have been married for 28 years to the same lovely woman (who thinks I am crazy!). I am 47 years old and have raised 3 kids, they have all moved out (Thank you)!!
I work as an auto technician with a master ASE certification and specialize in Fords... I know, I know...
I don't know how I turned into a mechanic as I started out in a TV repair shop in 1970 where an ex Navy electronics tech taught me electronics and I have had a love for it all my life, along with Sci-fi and Space. I would love to get inside an observatory. My hobby is computers and I build and fix them, also worked as a network engineer for 2.5 years in Florida. I currently have 8 computers at home crunching data for Seti@Home (reasons my wife thinks I'm nuts).
I just put together all the old parts I had around much like the team at UCB (loved the pics guys, reminded me of home!). I have been a member of the Planetary Societey and Seti for about 27 months and have turned in about 3600 work units. It takes a while but I am always upgrading. I have 3 233MMX machines, a real old 166Mhz, 2 700Mhz machines, a Dell 800 Mhz, and a newly purchased Gateway 1 Gig machine that will help stimulate production. Wife keeps complaining about the electric bill, but I figure it helps heat the house in winter :). Favorite show is the Babylon 5 saga, and of course Star Trek, old and TNG. Yep, I am an old trekker, we prefer that over trekkie you know.
Anyway, just trying to do my part...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definetely think that there is more life out in the universe, some more advanced, some less, some like us and some different. two things...
1. You would have to be a total idiot to think that out of the billions and billions of stars out there that we are alone.
2. Why haven't we been publicly sought out? Because we are hostile and warlike, self indulgent, shallow beings, think about it if you were them, would you walk up to an Earth government? Not if your smart, and if you can travel the vast distances of space, you must be pretty sharp!
That about covers it from my view...

I hope it gets better...
