Profile: Vanouplines Patrick

Personal background
Hello,

I'm Patrick Vanouplines from Belgium. Being 42 years,
I work as a librarian in the University Library of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

My job consists of
- searching for (valuable) information in order to assist education and research in our university
- guiding the university library through these turbulent days of budget cuts and electronic sources of information.

My hobby is astronomy. Particular interests are:
- radio astronomy,
- study of small bodies in the solar system,
- astronomical imaging.
Regarding radio astronomy:
- I have a (very small = 0.8m) radio telescope in my garden for testing purposes,
- together with a few other members of the local public observatory we develop a 3 meter radio telescope
- I also experiment with VLF receivers.

Best regards,
Patrick
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am convinced the extraterrestrial life exists,
but I am not convinced that concious life exists;
if extraterrestrial concious life exists,
we will probably not discover it,
because those life forms will be so intelligent
as to not transmit in one way or another signs of its existence.

We should also not transmit beacons for others to find us,
just for safety.
As long as humans are not able to stop killing humans on larger or smaller scales,
we should not be so proud to send beacons to other life in the universe...

I run SETI@home:
- because the results can be used for conventional research in radio astronomy,
- to contribute in this excellent world-wide computation effort,
- to help (still... but only in the third place) finding any signs of ET.
