Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Life most definitely exists elsewhere in the universe and quite likely elsewhere in our solar system. While I doubt we will find conclusive signs of extra solar life while I'm still alive, I firmly believe that life will be found elsewhere in our system within the next 20 years.

By all means, we should be transmitting a beacon. It should contain the sights and sounds of Earth. Assuming that the receiving intelligence can decode the data, it would be an excellent way of telling them who we were (the data is likely to be thousands of years old by the time it is received) at the time we sent it. This data should be as real-time as possible so that it chronicles our times and shows different aspects of our ever changing world. Pictures and sounds are a more universal language than any other -- I'm sure this sort of message will be easilly understood.

I run SETI@home because I believe in life outside our solar system, not to mention the fact that it's fun daydreaming about hearing the news that proof of extraterrestrial life was found by someone running SETI@home. :)
