Personal background
I'm a geekie girl, from Oregon. Currently on a summer break from classes, I'm working on getting my Associates of Applied Science degree in Computer Technology. Right now I'm working in Marketing for a major vehicle manufacturer. I'm 20 years old, and anticipating turning 21 *finally* in Decemeber. I have a kittie named Bucky because I'm a huge Get Fuzzy fan. I'm getting into this Seti@home deal because I believe we're not alone and I've probably seen Signs and Men In Black one too many times ;)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We as humans should most definately transmit a beacon for others to find. What better way to find out if/when/where there is other life out there, something that we are not aware of. Many skeptics believe there is nothing out there, so we should not waste our time. Wouldn't they be pleasantly or unpleasantly suprised if one day all of these UFO sightings..crop circles.. alien abductions.. came to reality right in front of their eyes? Why ignore the possibilities.. people didn't ever think we could put a man on the moon, that happened. The telephone was stated to be a useless invention that nobody would ever use... now it is a primary source of communication that is vital not only for personal use but more than anything business use, you can pick up a phone and call for information about *anything*. Who is to say that if we transmit a beacon out there that it won't ever be discovered? The information that we *do* put out there in the open for another lifeform is vital, as well. I believe we should keep it simple, very simple. Possibilities include making it clear to the outside world that our planet is based on economics and commerce, that we do share resources from all over the world. With that main point, it's possible that other life out there may have some sort of resource that we want/need, and we have a resource that they want/need, and by diplomatic means we could work together to supply one another.
I know this opens up the door for disagreements/war and possibly just overall culture clash. It's true we don't have any idea if other life out there would be hostile or friendly, but that's part of the risk we take in extending ourselves out there.
Basically, I'm running SETI because I want to be part of something that is proactively seeking the unkown, collecting data and research to help determine if there is anything out there. And when/if the unknown is found, I want to be able to know I took part in and helped in the discovery.
