Profile: John McClure

Personal background
I am a computer technologist who is currently working in the HPC community and living in Taiwan. I am a 37 year old American who considers himself more of a citizen of the world. I am married to a wonderful Chinese lady who has completed me. She has filled that void that I couldn't fill back in the US. Amazing eh?

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The chance that there isn't life out there, is much larger than the chance that there is.

As we are learning more about life, we are learning that some age old held beliefs like life is fragile are being smashed to bits. Life isn't fragile; life is resilient, strong and most of all, tenacious. Life not only fills every container that it exists in, it breaks out of those containers and spreads to other areas. Life survives in places that we never thought life could survive, and I believe that where you see organic molecules, like in the clouds of Titan (Saturn's moon), you'll find some sort of life. The extremophiles that live in the ocean trenches of Earth, or in boiling hot springs are just a smidgen of an example of what is possible out there. Every time people think, well, this environment is hostile to life....at least here on earth, we find life flourishing. Just because we haven't found life out there yet, doesn't mean it isn't out there. Its just a matter of decades really before we find life, but it could be a century or more before we actually find a signal from an intelligent life.

Again, this is all just speculation...if we don't get our butts in gear, we'll never know. I am calling on all of you, my fellow travelers in this journey to discover our galactic partners, to start participating. There is a company called t/Space, and I believe they have the right idea. Get man off this planet and into space with the frontiersman attitude. Go out with the spirit of frontiersmen and women. We as a group could donate US$10 dollars each to this company per year, and help them establish a foothold.... imagine if 2 million people sent ten bucks to that company.....they would have 20 million a year with which to speed their progress. Now imagine if we all sent 10 bucks a month. You get the picture.....I'm saying, its not the government who can make this happen....its us.
