Personal background
Hi. Neat stuff this is, huh? So, I am a male, I live in Canada, eh, and I like computers. I also like to read fantasy novels and I also watch Sci-Fi television programs (what a surprise!).
I'm 32, a tad sarcastic and cynical and probably spend too much time infront of the computer.
For those that care, my system is as follows: AMD Duron 750mhz, 448mb ram(pc100), 110gb HDD, Radeon 9000 128mb,
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist? Well that's like preaching to the converted - if I didn't think that I wouldn't be here, now would I? ;)
We'll probably discover ET just after I die, that way I'll miss out on it.
Benefits of discovery include, well, the women of course - they're bound to be exotic. LOL. We'll probably learn, most importantly, that we truly are NOT alone. It's also possible that at some point we will misinterpret something ET does as violent and likely respond "in kind" thus blowing our chances of starting out on the right foot.
Transmitting a beacon for others to find seems rather like shining a small, keychain flashlight into a really, really deep and dark forest - unless someone happens to pass infront of the light we won't see them. And chances are that anyone who sees that flahslight will turn tail and run away, if for only the immediate time being.
I run SETI@home because it's nifty. Without looking up the figures, I would guess there are at least hundreds of users (heh) and the amount of information is staggering. If I can at least help a little bit, wouldn't that make me feel like a trooper. I'm a believer in using this sort of system for many other kinds of research - even if in no other field than astrology (ya, I know, LOL). There must be hoards of radio information we could be crunching, why not use us - we're obviously willing to be used in that fashion.
