Profile: Dan Decker

Personal background
I'm a social studies teacher at both high school and college in Brownfield, Texas. I'm a Vietnam War veteran, retired from the Air Force. I'm married with three grownup and gone kids. I've been a fan of science fiction and space exploration since I was an early teenager and have followed our space program since that time. I watched the first orbital missions and the first moon landing live on black and white TV. It's a crime that we haven't been back to the moon in my students' lifetimes. By now we fully expected to have a colony on a space station, on the moon, and on Mars. What happened? Maybe making Contact will re-ignite the imaginations of our younger generations, the way we were as youngsters.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it would be awfully arrogant of us to think that of the billions squared stars and planets, ours is the only one with intelligent life. I think it is imperative that we search for other life in the universe. Being alone sucks. The SETI@home project allows anyone to participate in the search and I thank the program initiators for giving me the opportunity. I've been doing this now for about 5 years and currently have two computers running the program; this one at work/school and one at home.
