Personal background
My sons James and Paul as well as myself live in eastern Canada. We have a curiosity about what is ahead of mankind. Not to mention what was behind us in our past since there seems to be a link through time and space. We love to learn about everything (with help). We are only limited by our imagination.
None of us have university educations nor do we have technical backgrounds in this type of field. We just have a love of and thirst for knowledge. This SETI program wasn't installed just to help all of us learn a little bit more about what is around us but about ourselves too.Not just us, but anybody with a little curiosity can gain from this type of program.
The thirst for knowledge should be nourished at an ealy stage in life to expand all horizons. It helps us to ask questions as well as search for and understand the answers.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Life has to exist outside our planet.Humans can't be the only life in an infinite universe. We will never know when we will make contact until it actually happens, but I hope that it will be in my lifetime.Sending a purpose signal to let E.T. know we exist is a good idea but with all the different radio signals we are sending now, is it really neccessary? What is (or has) been sent tells the universe about us,good and bad.
We should be careful about our first face to face contact. We can't controll a common cold so how can we prepare for somekind of unknown illnes from an alien world. There really are to many questions that can be asked with few answers at this point, but we still have to reach for the stars for the answers (no matter what). This is why we have SETI@home running on our computer."We have to know."
Projects like this are enlightening in an educatonal sense but they will never give us the answers we need. That is why we have to keep then going. They are a means to the answers we need.
