Profile: Joe

Personal background
My name is Joe Campanini and I was born in 1942 in Matlock Derbyshire, but grew up in London. I now live in Durban, which is on the east coast of South Africa. I have been in the IT business since 6/6/1966. And I still love it.

As long as I can remember I have always been interested in astronomy and cosmology. I can remember as a child watching Patrick Moore, The Sky at Night; I think it was every Saturday night. I made myself a ten-inch Newtonian telescope when I was 16 years old. It was not very good. After emigrating to South Africa and eventually settling in Durban I joined the South African Astronomical Society and was, for a time, chairman.

My interests include Mathematics, Cosmology, and Middle Eastern History.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think the likelihood of there being alien civilisations is almost a certainty, however the likelihood of us actually detecting one in our immediate stellar neighbourhood (100 - 400 light-years) is extremely remote. The level of evolutionary synchronisation would have to be staggeringly high, unless, of course, communicating the way we do now using microwave frequencies is as far as one can go, and from now on it's just a matter of more and more refinement. Either way, the endeavour and excitement in attempting the task is worth all the blood, sweat and tears and every cents spent. Keep up the good work SETI.
