Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have always been fascinated by astronomy and the search for extraterestial life. I know we're not alone in this universe. Who knows, maybe we're just off limits for some reason or maybe we're not at the right place at the right time in our human development. Anything is possible. I keep an open mind for any and all possibilities.
When and How humans will discover extraterrestial life, I feel it will probably be by chance. It will probably be when we become more sophisticated in buidling new technologies to specifically look for that signal.
My question to you, why must it be in the form of a radio signal? I think we should consider other ways that they may be contacting us. How, I have know idea, so I guess the radio signal is our best bet.
As for us transmitting a beacon, why not. What kind of information: Who and what we are. Our solar system and it's location. An idea of our scientific capabilities. They probably have received other broadcasted frequencies from us since the inception of radio. They probably are aware of our violent tendencies but hopefully they have seen or heard our creative side also.
When that signal is discovered, I hope it won't be hid from the world like other secrets our government likes to hid. Even if it would happen in my life time, it still would not shake my faith and belief in God. To me it would strenghten that belief. If God created us, then he has created other life in the universe. Yes, I percsribe to the theory of a Creator. I believe that all aspects of religion and science can work hand in hand.
I run the SETI@home to do my part. Why shouldn't the public in general assist in the discovery of intelligent life in our universe. I would unite us like nothing else could. I would feel honored to be the person to discover that signal and share it with the world. As for the project, it's worth our time and effort and money. If I was rich, I would be happy to fund this research.
