Personal background
I was born in 1956 and I live in Oregon. I work in the IT field as a Sys Admin dealing with a variety of server and desktop OSen as well as EDI, LAN, and some (simple) programming/shell scripting.

On my own time I keep tropical fish, look at the stars/planets with binoculars and an 80 mm telescope. I was a musician in my younger days. I no longer play, but I still enjoy a beer or three on a regular basis ;)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think ET life exists. Given the number of stars and galaxies it would seem unlikely that our planet is unique. If we were to discover ET life in the near future, it will probably be on Mars, perhaps fossils.

Sending out a beacon is probably a waste of time. The likelyhood of a civilation close enough to us to respond in our lifetime is probably dim. Also, I don't like advertising unless I know my market. There is nothing to guarantee that a civilization thusly contacted wouldn't be technically much more sophisticated than us and perhaps hungry.

Remember the basic premise of many sci-fi movies from the 1950's: There is a big flashing neon sign in Earth orbit which we can't see. It says "Eat here" and has an arrow pointing down.

I run SETI because it is cool ! The idea of harnessing the spare CPU cycles of millions of computers to accomplish a task is remarkable. Of course, I like the task too.
