Personal background
I am currently a 20yr old from IL and am attending Arizona State University (ASU). I obviously am into computers but I like to play games a lot and mod them. Outside of the computer area, I do tons of sports: water skiing, snowboarding, skydiving, rock climbing, paintballing, rollerblading, hackey sack, etc.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think extraterrestial life exists but it won't be discovered for a few millenia. I believe the human race may even exterminate itself before this task is even reached. If we don't, I believe the only way is through hyperspace. Conventional space travel is just impractical. If we do make such technology available, I hope the planet has been united in some way so that alien races could look upon us simply as humans not as nationalities, races, etc. More than likely, they will be similar in nature to us. They will have agendas, ideas, and will most likely be nervous or hateful to us. If we make contact, we should do everything in our power not to provoke them to attack us. If they do, I just hope we have some sort of global defense force available.

I absolutely agree that beacons should be transmitting for others to find. Even if our race doesn't survive until alien discovery, at least we can leave a legacy to the aliens so that they knew that we existed and what we were like. I believe that important information regarding our current states in science and mathematics, as well as our complete history, should be transmitted. I think this information would be useful to keep a record of our history and progress as a species to other races in the event we don't make it.

I decided to run SETI@home because I shouldn't give the excuse that many others have given: "I don't have the time or money to do something that will not produce results right away." By contributing my resources (no matter how small in comparison it is), I may be speeding up any possible discoveries we might make. I believe this project is extremely important and beneficial. By using a collective of resources around the world, we can unite in processing this information. I believe this is a great concept. I just think that people should know about this more. It doesn't have NEARLY the publicity that it should have.
