Profile: Sean Butterfield

Personal background
I am a student in Prescott, Arizona. Since I was a small child, I've been increasingly fascinated with extraterrestrial life. I can't explain why exactly, but the possibility that there is life spread through the universe, that it is abundant and thriving, that it is not a miracle, that it is the way things are!... it means so much to me. I don't believe in God and, well, I suppose it helps me feel less alone in the universe. I believe that the search for ET is a great unifying force for our global civilization, and that eventually finding it will bind us together in renewed humanity.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI@home on my three computers because I believe in the cause! First of all, how can you beat the drama in the search for life?? How glorious to be a part of it! I think SETI is tremendously important to a cosmic humanity. Our civilization is destined to be celestial. There are other worlds we can walk on, other civilizations we can learn from... and science and technology make that ever more realistic a possibility every day. I believe our universe is a sentient one, and humanity is poised now to reach out and prove it. Who could have thought number crunching could be so romantic?
