Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
What is the search for extra-terrestrial life all about? As simple humans we are members of the Milky Way Galaxy, which has been around billions of years before us, but in the last hundred years it feels like we\\'ve changed so much, so much that the wonder of what rests in the heavens has disappated like so many gray clouds, lost in spray on hair and Viagra. As a culture, we are fortunate enough to have people still concerned with real values, values that lie in questions which we yearn to have answered inside. What is life really about? Where did we all come from? Is there anyone else out there? We haven\\'t even begun to tap the vastness of the potential of the human mind, let alone understand what we have accessed thus far. We don\\'t understand each other, though we\\'d like to pretend we do. How can we expect another species from another planet to understand us, why we fight, why we have war, why there is so much suffering. To that end, I hope for our sake that we do not meet any intelligent organisms from other planets. We must first learn to coexist as a species before we can expect to coexist as a Universe. Are we really ready to share what we have discovered with others? Probably not. Does that mean we shouldn\\'t search? No. That is why I run SETI@home. I hold the hope that one day I can be the one to stumble upon a signal, one that leads to the discovery of other life, one that will silence the planet and have it step back and take a look at itself in the mirror. Only then can we take a step forward.
