Profile: Jerry M (Mike) Steele, Jr

Personal background
I'm 58 and unmarried, though I've lived with the same woman for 31 years. I've been a Unix programmer for 20 years. I'm not big on physical motion, so have no hobbies. My commute is about 20 miles, mostly on one of the most congested freeways in the world. However, I commute on my motorcycle, so I'm allowed to use the HOV lane. That cuts the commute down to about 30 minutes. My life partner's son was six when we met. He's married and has a five-year old daughter who calls me Papa Mike. Somehow, she's become the most important thing in my life. We take care of her one day a week, and I live for those days!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe extraterrestrial life exists, but doubt if we will find it. From what I've been reading, it seems earth-type planets are probably not common. On top of that, there's been life on this planet for most of its existance, but intelligent life only recently. It seems that periodically, some big asteroid would hit and shake everything up, allowing a different branch of animal to become dominant. Then one tiny segment became us. I saw a program on TV that pointed out that our total gene pool has extremely little variation. That means that we somehow started as a very small group (possibly a group that survived a large-scale disaster). What this boils down to is that planets with high-order life forms, like Earth are uncommon, and on those, intelligent life is chancy, and if it forms at all, is unlikely to form in the same million years as we did.

Should we transmit? You bet! What could possibly go wrong?

I used to run seti@home as a favor to a friend. He got just about every computer in the company going in his father's name. Now I have the three computers in my home network doing it in my name. I like to see my name in the statistics. One of these days, I'll get my granddaughter's machine hooked into the network. I'll put them 166 megahertz to use!
