Profile: Quantum leap forward

Personal background
I work for South Carolina’s Bureau of Air Quality as an Environmental Engineer. I am in my mid-30’s and have been happily married since 1995. I have been running the SETI client since shortly after the time that I obtained Internet access. I began running the screensaver client, and then later ran it in the background. After a while the graphics became rather mundane, and since I have always had an interest more in the science, I now run the DOS client exclusively, along with SetiSpy, which offers some fascinating info on the particular unit I happen to be analyzing (plus it’s about 20% faster). I owe my genuine interest in astronomy to my dad who took me out into the fields when I was younger, where we set up the telescope and looked at all the wonders the night sky had to offer. I currently process at work on my brand new Pentium 4, 1800 Mhz (with Windows XP) and also at home on a Pentium II, 350 MHz (equipped with Windows 98). I also run SETI for the numbers, and I track my scores with those I know in competition for the highest ranking. I could use a little more computing power at home, but nevertheless, I am probably knocking out somewhere around 35 units on any given week. My averages are anywhere from 4.5 - 5 hours/unit on the P4, and 13-25 hours/unit on the home PC.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I run SETI simply for the science of it, as I am sure the data gathered and analyzed will benefit mankind and help us to better understand the universe in which we live. I do not believe that intelligent ET life (at least as we perceive ET intelligence) exists out there. I do believe that the universe had a creator (whom we call God) and that he created the universe so that mankind will stand in awe of everything he has done. Contrary to the majority view among SETI users, I do believe that we are so special in the eyes of God, that he WOULD create an entire universe, JUST FOR US! We may yet colonize and live on our moon, or perhaps even Mars sometime in my lifetime, but I don’t think that it is essential that we do so. What is essential is that we love God with all of our heart, mind and strength and that we appreciate this life that he has given us! This likewise means that we love our fellow man the way that God says that we need to love. If God had truly meant for us to have interaction with other groups, he would have more easily enabled us to do so (as it is, there isn’t even any air in space!). But hey, let’s see what we find out! The adventure is in the searching, which will make whatever we discover all the more sweet.
