Personal background
I am orginally from the Southeast (Aiken, SC), but I now live in Scottsdale, AZ. I am 27 years old, and think this is by far the coolest, most useful appilcation yet for the Internet. I am a photographer, and I travel a lot doing shoots around the world (so my computer will be running SETI for the majority of its life, because I am always gone).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am not sure if extraterrestrials exists, but I would hate to think that we are alone. I don't presribe to the theory that any life form out there is better than us. I think most likely they are trying just as hard to find others as we are. Eventually our paths will cross, and we will both realize it was more by chance than one being better than the other. I think the only real dangers to finding others is its religious effects. So many people have their faith bound to this planet, that such a matter will destory many images people have in their head. As far as a beacon, sure, why not, we already have Voyager I and II heading out into the great wide-open, a beacon on the planet may help. And I think the information should be no different than the info found on Voyager, it will provide a match for anyone listening. I run SETI@home because the amount of information we have is like light-years: even if we get to travel at the speed of light, we have hundreds-of-thousands of those years to get anywhere. So this is the least I could do.
