Personal background
I am currently 27, living in Los Angeles. I originally come from Edinburgh, Scotland and have been living here since August 1998. I am married and have a little girl born 8/18/2000. I love to play soccer, and currently work for a TV Network.
I heard about the Seti@home program a while back but did not have a decent computer to run it on. Now I'm glad to be helping out.
My home page is http://www.geocities.com/sdhannant/ and includes various pictures and is a work in progress!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think extraterrestrial life exists, otherwise I don't believe I would be participating in this study. I think everyone that is part of the program is hoping that they will discover that 1 signal that proves this. I have read through the information on the website, and have to admit that it is a slim chance that we will find, but if you don't ask, you don't get. I think it will take some time before we have technology that can really go and look for life rather than waiting on it coming to us. The rate that technology has advanced over the last 30 years though, should hold great hope for space exploration in general.
Humans are a curious race. We like to discover things, I think, without really examining the benefits and dangers. Some want to go ahead and find aliens, others fear that little green men will take over the earth. Again, I believe that if we don't go and look, we will never know. If it turns out bad, then statistically, I was going to die at 75 anyway (probably earlier given the fact that I like my alcoholic beverages!)
I hope that seti@home finds funding to keep it going. The experiment has shown the use of conecting people via the internet. Even if it doesn't find 'aliens', then the technology can be used in other aspects, and this can only be to the benefit of us all.
