Personal background
I am a second year medical student in San Antonio with a strong interest in all things extra-terrestrial. I consider myself an open minded skeptic. I think the universe is too big for us to be alone, but I seriously doubt anybody's bothered to stop by or even notice us yet.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes. Unfortunately, I think it will be discovered by accident. Only time will tell about benefits/dangers, but it is too important a question to ignore out of fear.

2. If a reasonable (can it work and how much will it cost) project can be accomplised, then it absolutely should be done. We should not let our enthusiasm skew our objectivity.

3. The best reason--I want to be the one. Plus, I like the idea of everybody contributing a little to serve a greater whole.

SUGGESTION: Include "My Best Score" or "Most Noteworthy Unit" to the graphics. Use the established criteria that makes a particular block worth more scrutiny and let each user know how many of their units qualify or how close they've come. Even though individual users don't have any direct control over the outcome, it may encourage people to keep their computers plugging away, just to beat their personal best.
