| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

I believe that extraterrestrial life does exist, even if in some unknown and unfamiliar form. I feel that it is also important to try to validate the possibility, but only with certain cautions. SETI is an ambitious project created by incredible people, but if we find intelligent life beyond earth, we cannot asume anything about them and their intentions. It would be foolish to think that any intelligent life form out there is equally interested in being diplomatic and friendly as we might be. There is of course, nothing preventing them from being totally cordial.
By participating in the SETI@home project I hope to offer a helping hand in searching for that needle in the haystack. My contribution does not require much on my part except to keep my computer on. Like many of the other participants, I hope that if discovery is made, I can say I was a part of it. Even more, it would be great to be the person whose computer isolated the one signal that led to a great discovery.
I hope we are not alone, and I also worry that we are not. |
