Profile: Ian

Personal background
I am from Aberdeen in Scotland originally from Shetland Islands in north Scotland. I am 40 years old and have many interests and hobbies. They tend to centre on science and technology, one of the reasons I became a member of SETI@home. I graduated in 2001 from Aberdeen university with a Masters and I am still high from achievement.
I am currently working on Chaos theory, and it's not chaotic, but it can be a drudge at times.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think that life in other worlds exists. The methods we humans use for detecting signals from other civilisations are based on what our understanding of the cosmos is. We use frequency of a known dimension only because we have discovered that band of transmission. If only a part of the range had been discovered then we would be using that range to search. Perhaps some beings are using a range that lies within the bandwidth, hidden like a carrier wave, and without the knowledge of how to find it we won't be able to decipher their message. But as nature is universal the beings would have had a discovery path much the same as ours and knowing this it will be an advanced race that would make contact with us first, although we should be able to detect their signal long before they could detect ours. We may have already found the signal, but until we can recognise it and understand it we can only find the energy output, the signature.

I don't think that there will be much danger from any alien race. When it is considered that if a race were going to travel vast distances, even at the speed of light, the time would be in tens of years at the least. The resources that would be needed if they were going to try and capture this little planet would be enormous. Thinking of why! The moons and rocks and other planets have more resources than the earth and one day it will be us that will mine and collect them for our journey into space. Our journey into space will only mirror the methods that we have used throughout history in exploration and colonisation.

By making contact with other races we can benefit from advancement. This is the same as what has happened in history. Now the entire planet shares the same information, technology and medical expertise. The only problem we humans have is would any alien race want to share their knowledge with us, yet. I am doubtful.

It has always been part of human nature to discover and the SETI project is discovery. The SETI@home involves every body, no exclusions and this
