Personal background
I am 43 as of March of this year (2003), work in the computer science and communications field, been married for almost 25 years and have 8 children and 2 grandkids.

Love [b]space and time
. Two of my [i]favorite things.

My favorite quote is a Zen-reference from the Author of "The Power of Now", Eckhart Tolle...

"Past and Future are not real, they are only illusions. There is only Now"
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe it is almost ludicrous, at the least quite egocentric, to think that Extraterrestrial life doesn't exist. Heck, life exists on this very planet that we are unaware of!

As far as humanity is concerned, I believe that descirbing our own species as "intelligent" may not be all that accurate; at least in the cosmic sense. We still have an awful strong tendancy to kill, or try to kill, each other as well as all sorts of other life and species here. Is there any way that can be construed as intelligent?

Perhaps when we are conscious enough we will (as a society or species) recognize or discover it (extraterrestrial intelligence outside of our planet). Whether or not we do is not all that important. But it certainly will be both entertaining, and exciting, when it happens, won't it?

As far as our own efforts, we have been transmitting radiowaves into space since the late 19th century, as far as I know. Whether we actually design and create a specific communication beam to transmit our own presence is not that important eiother, to myself, anyway. If it happens, it happens.

I think SETI@home is a great utilization for all those free cycles that home PC users have when they are not using their PC. I just hope that SETI releases the communications when they get them, as I feel they will, and does not hide data "in the interests of National Security", or any other such nonsense.
