Personal background
I'm mid forties from South Texas. My biggest hobby is Ham Radio, with a side dish of sailing and gardening. One of the three always keeps me hopping. I repair Comercial Kitchen Equipment for a living, a very interesting line of work if I say so myself.
I'm a former submarine sailor with extensive background in electronics. After service I worked in office machine repair,(copiers, computers, cash registers, calculators, printing presses and typewriters.) After making a moral based move from a dishonest employer, I stumbled into my current field. It's one of those jobs that nobody thinks of but somebody has to do it. There's no school to teach this kind of work it's OJT all the way. It involves electromechanics and covers electricity, eletronics, plumbing, gas, and steam, and particularly the combination of all of the above. It is the most challenging career I've ever been involved with and I love it.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET exist? Who are we to be so vain to think it doesn't. In my life time I've seen color television, microwaves, moonwalks, refrigerators using steam as a coolant, synthetic plastics with no base elements in it. The dominant species has evolved in the space of 50 years farther than it has in the last 3000 years. Is it not possible for another planet to have the same boom in evolution? If life as we no it does exist elswhere will it be farther advanced than us? Maybe, maybe not. I hope when we do comit to Darwin expeditions into space, we can keep an open mind about what is to be considered advanced. It may be an ant colony on Pluto, but even that is a civilization.

Why run Seti? I still have my original H-90 personal computer that runs at 6 mhz with a massive 64 kb memory and 8 inch floppies.Don't forget the enormous 5 mb hard drive. Today we use 850mhz with 60 gb hard drives. The co-operation of 3 million users each taking a bit of information to process and return to for the largest networked supercomputer in the world with one common goal. Participating in that feat is reason enough even if you don't believe in extraterestrials.

Sugesstions? Have an opt out for the screen saver version for the dos version. I started 2 years ago and run 130 hrs per unit. I thought I was doing good. I started surfing the Seti site and was amazed at the returns some were getting 4 to 6 hrs per unit. Thousands of work units already processed. Thats when I found the Dos version with out all the graphics. Now I too run 2 to 3 work units a day and boy have I got a lot of catching up to do. Some on should tell new users so the don't get discouraged.

I heard of a Linux system using co-processing with a network of 5 junk computers to create a super computer. Has anyone considered doing this in Dos?
