Personal background
Are we alone? I doubt it! When you stop to think how small our planet is in comparison to the vast amount of space that we have to explore I would bet that their are many other places that are teaming with life.

My background is in computers. I love to hate them and hate to love them. The computer industry is advancing so fast that I can't keep up. Computers are very useful tools that are very under utilized. Sure you have all of your word processing and spread sheets but the amount of time that the computer is really spending on doing things for you is very small. That’s one of the reasons I run Seti on my computer. As long as my computer is on why not have it doing something useful. Hopefully one of us finds that 'proof' that there is intelligent life out there.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I hope extraterrestrial life exists. I doubt that I'll be around when we find it or even make contact with it. If intelligent life is discovered I'm sure that it will still be many decades before we are able to communicate with it and even once we make contact we will still have to work out the details of a common language to communicate with.

I doubt that if we were to transmit a beacon with our current technology that anyone would be able to see it. We are a little dot in the big sky with this huge Sun behind us that is producing all kinds of radio interference. If we transmit a signal that is wide enough to cover any significant area of the sky the sun will most likely drown our signal out.
