Personal background
I'm a 23 year old programmer. Since I work with computers 8-16 hours a day at work, they are not my hobbie any more. My main hobbie/past time is that of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and my new adopted 3 year old Alaskan Malamute "Princess". I find her taking up more of my Jiu-Jitsu time than anything else has ever even came close to.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe extra terrestrial life exists. In our galaxy? Possibly, but I'm not so sure about that one. Our universe is so random, the probability of there being another life sustainable planet in our galaxy has got to be small. (And still have life on it... (mars)). Possible benefits that give me that positive faith about the whole situation are new power sources that don't destroy our planet, new transportation methods ("Engage!"). Possible dangers, which give me that negative feeling about finding extra terrestrial life, are that of new power sources which are able to create a bomb which can destroy a whole planet ("The power to destroy a planet is insignificant when compared to the power of the force").

I believe we should hide our existance. I think we are sitting on a oasis goldmine of resources. Oxygen, Water, Plants, Fossil Fuels. All of which we are destroying day by day, but we have no other place to go, so we need to keep and protect what we have. I belive that if there is another race out there looking for whatever they call extraterrestrial life, they are in the same boat as us or worse - Running out of resources and space. They are going to want to visit just as we will want to attempt to visit someone we find. When I say visit I'm thinking "Lets look these people over and see what kind of power they are compared to us".
I would like to be able to trust in someone else out there. But I can't even trust my neighbors next door to not ransack my house if I leave the door open while I go to the store for some beer and chips. I want to believe there will be an alien race superior to us in intelligence and more civilized than us, but I'm not willing to chance putting my offspring into slavery, or (a better way) immediate death.
