Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think that there is life out there somewhere. However, I don't know if it will be intelligent life. My opinion is that life is the creation of God, and so if there is intelligent life, it's because God chose to create it and he sustains it. Therefore there could be intelligent life out there if it fits into God's plans.
I would be surprised if the SETI project found evidence of life. It seems to me that the time span which any society would use the type of signals we are searching for is going to be limited to a century or two. Beyond that, new technology would likely start to be used for communication. However, there is the possibility that a society would send out continuous signals, using older technology in the hopes of being detected. But I still think it's a very long shot.
Despite this, I'm still happy to participate in the project. There's something very noble about the search, even despite the odds. When we have more advanced technology, we'll use that technology to search. Right now, this is all we have, so we use it to search. It's the search that is important. The desire to know, to dream and to do all within our power to better ourselves. Even if we never find what we're looking for, we will be a better people for the continued effort.
