Personal background
I am a 25 year old UNIX Systems Administrator. I've been with SETI@Home since I was in college at Santa Rosa Junior College (where I joined the sonic.net team). I've subsequently run setiathome on SPARC/Solaris machines (from Netra T1s through V880s), Intel/(*BSD\|linux) machines and Intel/Windows 2000 machines.

Currently I am load-testing some of our new backend V880s using setiathome. The UNIX clients leave a little to be desired, but work fairly well (and fast).

I am a PC Gamer and a RPGer. Current PC games are Grand Theft Auto III, Army Operations and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Current RPGs are D&D 3rd Edition, Blood Bowl and Vampire: The Masquerade.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe in SETI and joined SETI both to help prove the distributed computing concept and to find ET. There must be something else out there and I hope to learn of it in my lifetime.

The obvious danger of finding ET is that, if we're any indication, they will be xenophobic and violent. Nonetheless, the search for other intelligences can only help us to further define ourselves and our own intelligence.

If we make contact we should send everything we have on philosophy and science. The only commonality we may have with another intelligence is the thirst for more knowledge. If we make the first gesture towards information exchange, maybe they'll follow in kind.
