Personal background |
The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is the home of the Oglala Lakota people.
I am a Jesuit priest. It has been my priviledge to live and work in Pine Ridge since 1997. We face many challenges on a daily basis; work keeps me very busy, and I love working with the Lakota community.
I have multiple sclerosis--a chronic, progressive neurological condition. It slows me down, but there are lots of wonderful people here who help me to keep going.
I started off running SETI@home on just my personal computer, but now have it on several school computers.
My first "career" was in computer programming, and I am still interested in computers. I learned some helpful things while tweaking computers to crunch SETI@home work units. All the computers that I work on are better optimized now. :) |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I guess I read too many science fiction books as a child not to believe that there are other self-aware life forms in the universe. The possibility raises some interesting theological questions, but I have not pondered them in depth.
I am betting that ET's will be friendly. I believe that the powers of cooperation and altruism are stronger than the powers of fear and destruction. Ultimately, the strongest civilizations will thrive and acquire the ability to encounter others.
I like the idea of using idle CPU cycles to do something useful, and I am fascinated by the possibilities of distributive computing. SETI@home is a great project. |
