Well, off course that extraterrestrial lifes exists and I say that because it's impossible that GOD don't take a precaution measure in case if human race will fail developing in good direction and blows them self in the stars.
Well, I think that we will meet E.T. when we will be at the same level of civilisation (culture,habits,tradition,technical,spiritual,etc. )with the E.T.'s civilisation because being at the same level we will understand each other better than if our civilisations will be not so close or even diametral opposite.
Each of our civilisations will try to find a way or a better way to understand other civilisation culture, technology, the spirituality...etc. using the prism of his own technology to find clues, matching patterns, meanings like we do with ours ancient languages.
...But if our civilisations are too far and a bridge of communication can't be done yet because of too much differences it will depend that type of civilisation of E.T. and how advanced is to expect at negative or positive reactions.
A very advanced spiritualy and technologicaly in equal measure civilisation will help an other civilisation few advanced giving clues, messages that will be understooded and will help the raise of that civilisation at a specific moment from it's development, a moment when they will be enough developed to decipher and understand the meaning of the clues, message.
A civilisation more based on technology and without few enough spirituality to try to understand other civilisation will try to harm other civilisation.
By the simply fact that this process by understanding each other it's need very much time and asume that exists high and powerfull technology and resources that will help at reducing the distances and discrepancy between ours civilisations it means that implies patience of both sides and desire to communicate.
