Personal background |
I'm your average anthropomorphics fan, if there is such a thing, from Los Angeles. Right now, I've been working as a veterinary assistant for about 9 years now and it's allowed me to have contact with our own earthbound version of alien lifeforms. If you think your cat or dog thinks like you, trust me....you couldn't be more wrong.
Outside of my computer and the Net, my main pasttime is reading, reading, and more reading. The employees at most of the local bookstores, new and used, know me by sight. Inside the computer, it's too dark to read of course. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
As much as I'm interested in the deep past, I'm also fascinated by the prospect of a future that must include a universe flourishing with life. Labratory experiments have shown that, given the presence of appropriate chemicals and energy, the formation of the basic amino acids necessary for organic existance can take place almost anywhere. I have no expectation of humanoid figures like those from Star Wars or Star Trek suddenly appearing on our doorstep though. They are more likely to be akin to James White's aliens from his Sector General series, with an incredible variety of forms and biochemistries.
I don't know that physical contact will be the first means of how we meet an alien lifeform. Interstellar travel of any kind right now looks like it would involve an incredible investment of physical resources. I expect that we will encounter a stray signal, perhaps heavily encoded or complex, one day and we'll have to work back from there. Tracing it's source, power levels of the signal....these are just the sort of things that a large scale project like SETI@home is perfect for. |
