Personal background
I'm an applications programmer and Linux evangelist in Washington, DC. I switched to Linux in 1993, and am particularly interested in promoting the use of Linux in academic environments.

When not glued to the keyboard, I rot my mind with bad science fiction on the tube. But occasionally, I get out on my bicycle, and go for long (e.g. DC to Colorado, DC to Ohio) rides. (Normally, I'm doing a much shorter ride, commuting back and forth to work.) I also fantasize about being a famous musician, when I bother to dust off my flute.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm one of the early birds here (registrant 48). I attended a 12-hour NASA symposium in '99, at which folks from SETI announced an experimental beta version of SETI@home, and I jumped on it. As an avid fan of the more hopeful science fiction, as opposed to the Bug-Eyed Monster (BEM) variety, I'd been vaguely aware of SETI for a while.

I'm an atheist, and a skeptic. I find it very arrogant to believe that we're the pinnacle of creation, or even that unique in the cosmos. While I don't have a strong science background, I think that NOT looking at the possibility of life elsewhere, embraces a dogmatic "flat-earth" attitude.

Should we broadcast? Heck, yeah! What? Anything except reality television shows.
