Personal background
I'm originally from Michigan, born outside Detroit, but have lived in Florida most of my life. I'm retired Air Force. I was a volunteer firefighter for almost nine years. I am currently a Florida Paramedic. I have always been interested in science, including, but not limited to, biology, astronomy, weather, and the search for any evidence of the existance of extraterrestrial life. I love storm-chasing, although I have not actually had the opportunity to participate in a chase...yet. I have video-taped a hurricane as it made landfall in our area (Hurricane Opal). I also like to dabble with do-it-yourself home projects that involve carpentry and a little creative landscaping, too. I got involved with this SETI program and computer searching because it would be the highlight of my life if I was one of the lucky ones to detect a signal indicating potential intelligent life "out there somewhere".
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am a firm believer in the existance of extraterrestrial life. I think it is pretty much a conceited view to believe that we are alone in the vastness of the universe, religious views not withstanding. How we discover that life, though, I believe, is not going to be the proper question. I believe it will end up being more appropriate to ask, "When will E.T.'s find us?", because, I believe that it will be the E.T.'s that end up letting US know that they exist by making an appearance here and settling all the questions once and for all.
I think that we should, and have to, transmit a beacon if we are to increase our chances of finally making contact. It should include, as a minimum, the same information sent with the Voyager probe, but I also think that it should not include specific information that gives too many details about our level of development. I think that caution should moderate our enthusiasm.
As I stated earlier, I run SETI@home because I have a very serious desire to be part of helping discover the existance of other life forms in the universe. It would be the climax of my life, and, I believe, the lives of all humanity. If it were my computer that actually got a serious hit on a signal, I would probably react more strongly than winning a multimillion dollar lottery. It would be a feeling beyond words. Because of that, I have always felt that SETI should have been a major part of government funded research, at least equal to the space program and NASA.
