Personal background
I am an artist and philosopher, a baker and candle stick maker. I have moved thru life trying my hand at more things than I can conveniently remember. Fixing or making are always my first choice when a need arises. I built my computer and the desk it sets on. I am a generalist and lifetime student of everything.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life must exist.
The stars, and planets around them, are made of the same elements as those that made life possible here. The physical laws that define how and when those elements combine do not change from one solar system to the next. How many times have searchers found indications of water in other systems? I believe that water is far more common than we know. And therefore life, more closely 'related' to us than we may be comfortable with, must be almost as common.
Our little green people are out there; but how and when we contact them cannot be guessed at. Our own signals are barely detectable to even our nearest neighbors. If listening for signals is searching for the proverbial needle in a hay stack, trying to send one is like trying to shoot that needle in the dark.
People often speculate on whether the risks are worth the benefits. Everything is a risk. Every time you leave the house its an adventure. You may meet a new friend, or enemy. You may have lunch, or be lunch. You don't know until you go out there. And we will go out there. We have to. What is more abhored by people than lack of knowing? Isn't that why that apple got eaten in the first place?
