Personal background
Hi, my name is Eric. I am 27, married and have a 3 year old son. I own and operate a little gas station in Ontario where I have several computers at my disposal. I run SETI on all my work computers as well as my home computers. I'm a big X-Files fan and will do anything to try to help the cause of first contact. The truth is out there!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think alien life exists and that they are already here amongst us. We need to keep sending out signals in hopes that some kind of lifeform will intercept it. The signal should be simple...prime numbers. I run SETI at home because I believe its a worthy cause. It costs nothing, it interferes with nothing and you hardly ever know its there. The program is nearly perfect. I say nearly because it lacks a detailed progress report. For this flaw I run SETI in conjunction with SETISPY, which is a very nice little program that gives great details about the current unit being analyzed as well as keeping a log of previous units already processed. The other problem I have with SETI is that it does NOT allow you do shut down WIN98 properly without shutting down SETI/SETISPY first. To some people, this might not seem like a big thing. Just shut down SETI/SETISPY first you would say..right? Here's a scenario; You ask your neighbour to run SETI for you. He is very computer illiterate. It took alot for you to convince him that it would not hinder his computer in any way. You install SETI, set it up to run minimized at startup and all seems to work fine until he decided to shut down. Over the next couple of days, he gets tired of screwing around with having to shut down SETI first before powering down his pc and decides to un-install SETI. Now I know that there are other 3rd party programs out there that allow for this procedure to go smoothly but I'm also aware of the possibility that these programs could somehow corrupt the data but to me it's just not worth the risk. SETI@home should implement this feature in its next version update. Keep in mind that I use SETISPY in conjunction with SETI. Maybe I'm wrong. It's happened before and it will probably happen again. If this is the case someone please let me know at blade@isys.ca please.
