Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Numbers run the universe. Perhaps God was an accountant in His former life . . . . But by simple math, if Earth is the only inhabited planet ANYWHERE, then the universe really IS a lonely place to live. Will we "discover" extraterrestrial life? In our lifetime - no. Someday? If the "powers that be" don't blow the place apart, maybe. I don't think the "discovery" is as important as the dream. Sure, we all believe in "something" but we would probably be diaspointed in what might actually be found . . . .

SETI doesn't propose "answers" but it does keep the "question" in front of us:
Is anybody home? Did "ET" dial the correct area code? What the h@*# might happen if "ET" answers . . . .

Personally, I don't think it matters much. In my lifetime I don't expect an answer. Given the distances involved, if we're talking radio wave communications, nobody will be around to respond to answers we might get back to questions asked 50 - 100 years before! But there IS life out there. Want proof? Ask yourself this simple question, "Why are YOU running the SETI program?"! If you don't believe that there's a chance of encountering "something" then you're wasting your time. (And I know that 99.995% of the people in the world aren't interested in doing ANYTHING that won't get them SOME recognition . . . .)

Believe. That's all you have to do.

I don't need a radio-telescope to tell me that there is somebody "out there" . . . but I'd like to know why they aren't answering our call . . . .
