Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1) I think ET-life exists but I'm not sure we have the means to make that discovery. If it is "common" we should be able to prove it as soon as we can make interplanetary travel just a little bit more common (25-50 years). But if it's a rare commodity, I'm reasonably sure that the vastness of space will conceal it from us for many eons to come.
2) Well a beacon isn't likely to bring much in the way of an intergalactic phone call, but somewhere someday it might be nice to know another intelligent life will have proof we once existed, long after we've managed to kill ourselves off.
3) The potential payoff vs. the effort is just positive that I needed to be a part of something much larger than me and my messy computer desk. |
