Personal background
I am studying Biology at the University of Iowa. I play the tenor sax in the marching band, am active in my residence hall government, and have turned my dorm room into a small greenhouse. One of my favorite hobbies, though, has to be racing my dad for the completion of the most SETI data units. By the way, I'm winning. :-D
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I most certainly believe that there is life out there. It may not be life that can exist in the conditions that our planet provides, but it's gotta be out there. There are more stars in the sky than could be counted in one human's lifetime and I find it hard to believe that there isn't at least one planet capable of supporting life (no matter how primitive) orbiting one of these stars.

I can't say (and I think much of mankind will join me on this) whether we'll ever make contact with extraterrestrials or how this contact might affect Earth. However, I hope that, if we ever do make contact, the "War of the Worlds" that so many sci-fi authors predict doesn't ensue. So when the little green men say "We come in Peace" (or "Wir kommen mit Frieden," or whatever language they say it in!) let's trust them.
