Personal background
I'm a 47 YO software test engineer who slaves for the almighty dollar by testing commercial software. I've been "into" computers for many years -- Let's just say that my first computer had 256 BYTES of memory in it (it was 1976, actually).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? I don't know, but just have to ask the question. If we were alone, I would just have to ask the question God "Why bother?" Why all the mess and fuss and bother if he just intended to plunk us down in an out of the way corner of the universe & setup the laws of physics to make in extremely difficult to go anywhere else?

Should we transmit a beacon? Probably not. It be a little like the two YO toddler standing in the front hall and shrieking his/her head off just to hear himself make noise. We need to get ourselves a bit more mature (grown up?) before we start announcing ourselves to the universe at large. Think logically: If we?re alone, you?ve accomplished nothing. If we?re not alone, you?ve just annoyed the neighbors. And in any of the neighborhoods I?ve lived in, its always much better to bring the new neighbor a nice pie instead of just shouting at them.

Why run the SETI@Home client? Why not? Just doing my part to help ask the question.
