Personal background
I retired after 24 years in the Submarine Service in Dec 1992. I was born in 1948 in rural Kentucky, moved to Florida in 1958 where I lived until I finished school. Before joining the Navy I worked at several jobs (Newspaper, Well drilling, Recording Studio, Manufacturing, and even fast food). My primary job in the Navy was electronics oriented (SLBM Fire Control). I also had tours operating telemetry and digital data gathering equipment at the Eastern Test Range (Cape Canaveral), working as an organizational development consultant, and as Guidance Systems Division Officer at the Polaris Missile Facility. I actually worked on IBM hard disk systems in 1971(Stacked 15" ferrous oxide coated aluminum disks with 20 R/W heads) That could store an amazing (for that time) 4mb. I have been married twice (unsuccessfully) and have a 14 yr old daughter. I've always believed that Science Fiction is just a preview of Science Fact.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
In my opinion extraterrestrial life is a certainty. When and where this will be confirmed, I have no idea. SETI, for me, is very similar to the sonar systems on a submarine, passively listening for things that can be intelligently interpreted. If there is intelligent life in our corner of the universe, it could very well be essential to human survival to know about it. Our planet has been broadcasting signals that travel at near light speed for most of the last century, this creates an ever expanding volume of space where evidence of our existence can be detected. As far as the discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence, I would much rather be the discoverer than the discoveree. No beacon, please. Listening for signals at the Earth's surface seems too cluttered. I believe that a probe sent to an asteroid or the moon, where it could listen while shielded from earthbound emissions, would stand a much better chance of detecting distant signals.
