Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am sure there is life somewhere beyond our world, given the number of possible places for life to start. The notion that it is more advanced than ours may or may not be true, and if they are they must have reached our stage of evolution and development thousands of years ago, just to receive information from them today. What stage of evolution would they be in now! If we would meet them now it could only be on their terms since they have to come to us, with all sorts of advanced technology including weapons perhaps. Consider the difference between the weapons of the USA and the cave man. But what of the benefits if they were not aggressive and we could put aside our prejudices and benefit from their progress. If we don't try to reach out we will live alone in the vastness of space and the risk, potentially catastrophic, is worth the effort. If we are to join the intergalactic community we must be prepared, the first step is knowing they are there. SETI has allowed me participate in this endeavor and in a way cast my approval on the non isolation policy in the cosmos.
