Personal background
Hullo you lot! I came to the USA from Scotland when I was just 18 and I am now 50. I've been interested in Space from when I was in bootcamp and we were rousted out of our beds and made to stand in formation (in our underwear!) and look at the moon. We were told that at that moment, United States military men were standing on that moon. We were told that if we had just a shred of the drive of those brave men, we couold accomplish anything, anything at all, in the United States Marine Corps and in life. I served 21 years in the Marine Corps and accomplished everything I set out to do. Since I retired from active duty in 1989, I became disabled (I'm a paraplegic) and, two years later, started the DragonRose Brewing Company. We currently produce 7 ales and 3 lagers at a rate of 820 barrels per year.
My wife, Siubhan, and I raised 4 children, 3 girls and a boy. Our son, Charlie, is in the US Army as a military police officer stationed in South Korea and daughters Jeni and Sara have given us a total of three beautiful grand daughters...six more and we've a softball team!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? YES! I feel that we will have contact whithin that next ten years and that we will be contacted...they will seek us out. I can see only one danger, that our(human) society will be subsumed by those that contact us. Other dangers or benefits are not discernablle as we have no idea who or what these beings will be or what their intentions will be.
Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? Yes! How will we be found if we do not advertise our presence and willingness to be contacted? We should send some basic facts and aspects of humanity, something that lets others know a bit about us, perhaps a description of a human being, some of our music...such like that.
I run Set@home because we(all of us in this thing) might just find that one spark of some other race of beings glimmering in the darkness. What better reason is there? This is a good and worthwhile project and I'm (we're) proud to be a part of it.
Oh, in the attached picture, I'm the one in the front row, sixth from the left.
