Personal background
Well, I currently live in Northern Virginia. My hobbies are basically computers and plants. I've always been interested in space and extraterrestrial life and particularly radio astronomy.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think extraterrestrial life does exist, however, I don't think humans will ever discover it or make contact with it. If there is life out there, it is going to be so far away that we will never be able to have any efficient communication. Even with the exponential growth with technology, I just don't think we will ever reach the point of wormholes and other space travel / communication methods. Chances are, we will destroy ourselves first, or an asteroid or comet will collide with the earth, killing all life.

I think humans should transmit some sort of beacon at nearby stars. If any life intercepts it, there is also a good chance they might be able to communicate back with more efficient means than we can. It would make the most sense to send something like the "aliens" sent us in Contact. Anyone that intercepts our signal would not speak any of our languages, and just like the movie says, mathematics is the only truly universal language. And even then, they would need pictures. I think we had it right when we sent out Voyager, but now, instead of a physical craft, we need to send out a digital signal that can travel much faster.

I run SETI@home just so I can do my part. If life ever is found, I want to know that I did a little bit to contribute to the discovery.
