| My name is Mike Milliken. I am 39 years old and live in Port of Spain, Trinidad. I am a petroleum geologist with a large oil company. I am one the many scientists companies like mine hire and as such am interested in many other things related to science besides oil and gas. Hence I was interested in this project. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

I believe extraterrestrial life does exist. There are simply too many likely stars out there for this not to have happened on many other planets in the universe. Whether that life is intelligent is a tougher question. I do not believe that we have been visited by ET if we had been visited it would have made the front page of reputable newspapers everywhere. It doesn't make sense for ET to come all the way here and then hide.
I believe we are transmitting a beacon of our own accord through TV, radar and other means without a purposeful effort. I don't think we need to worry about transmitting something sensible until we know somebody is out there.
I am running SETI@home on my home PC because I believe we probably are receiving some kind of signals equivalent to TV or radar and just don't realize that we already have proof of ET's existence. Once we have a signal, figuring out just what that signal means will be difficult probably. What if it is radar or radio static for instance?
I think SETI should be sampling a much broader bandwidth of frequencies. Just because we generally work in this bandwidth doesn't mean ET does. With more data maybe fewer repeats of data packages would be received since they would take longer to work over. It really wouldn't bother me if the analysis took weeks as a screensaver. It runs mostly at night anyway. However, I do connect over a poor phone modem so that is a limitation. I would be willing to handle maybe double to triple the file size and then it gets cumbersome to upload and download. |
