Personal background
Degrees in Chemistry '67 (University of Toledo, Toledo, OH) and Computer Science '85(Youngstown State University). Have never wondered if "their out there", wonder if "they've been here" and regret that I haven't (and I'm sure I won't be able to) "been there". Even if it's only Mars. Belong to the Mars Society. Own "too many computers" (10 - including a non-functioning PC_1) Read a lot of science fiction. Tend to follow NASA's mission coverage on NASA-TV until the verbose, badly run PAO coverage gets to me. The missions cover themselves better without their intervention.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
With the size of the universe - there must be other intelligent beings. It would be waste of a universe if there wasn't. With our beacons (radio/tv programming and other E-M radiation) others would know we are here but might wonder if we are intelligent. (My former congressman was famous for wanting to be "beamed up" by Scotty.) We also radiate a lot of energy in the visible, IR and UV spectrum.

Joined SETI@home shortly after it started. The data collects faster than it can be processed. All those CPU cycles are not going unused now.
