Personal background
I recently got an always-on Internet connection. I decided to put my computer to good use and dedicate it to the search for aliens. That's why I downloaded the Seti@Home package.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, extraterrestrial life exists. The numbers are too good to believe anything else. We will make contact at some point in our evolution and if we aren’t ready for it, we’ll get taken advantage of.

A lot of idealistic, preachy science-fiction portrays extraterrestrials as having some "cosmic wisdom," a sage-like quality, or as being benevolent or ethical. There is no reason to believe anybody "out there" will fit that description.

This doesn't mean "they" can't be that way. More likely than not, they will be like us - opportunistic. If the opportunity presents itself for us to take advantage of a situation, we always do. Only when we sense an equal do we feel compelled to suggest some level of fairness or cooperation.

We don't know if we are equals with anybody out there. Caution suggests we assume we are the lowest form of life, that we keep our mouths shut and eyes open, and hope we find them first. Then we can decide if we want to engage - or prepare to defend ourselves.

If space is neighborhood you’ve never been in before, you don’t walk into the middle of it, shout your presence, and yell for somebody to come be your friend. Instead, you walk with confidence, don’t look anybody in the eye and pay attention.

We need to find "them," not the other way around. That means we should not send any beacons.
