Personal background
I have a degree in Electronic Engineering, but spend most of my time writting
embedded software for a living. My non-revenue generating activities include
Flying fixed wing aircraft, building robots (fire fighting robots), Shooting,
Ocean Rowing, and raising two children. By far the most difficult is the last! :>)

I'm currently have 7 machines running SETI@home, 5 Pentiums of various speeds,
one PII-266 and one PIII-550. The OS's include RedHat Linux 7, Windows 2000,
Windows 98 SE, and Windows 95. They are all connected via Ethernet through a
10/100 Eight port switch, with Web access via a Win98 Internet Connection sharing
machine. When I have enough time to figure it out, I'm going to switch to a Linux
server.

The investment in space, and space related activities has always seemed to me to
be a no-brainer. One has to dream and have goals and it's hard to imagine a more
worthwhile one.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I became interested in the SETI@home project when I first heard about it on a
program prior to it's launch. It grabbed my imagination right away, particularly
in regards to using idle CPU cycles to do useful work. I signed up to be an early
test bed, but the rolls were filled. When the actual general launch occured, I
didn't get notified, but stumbled across it by accident. From then on, I've tried
to keep every machine I have running the client.

I run SETI@home because I want to contribute to a sorely neglected area of human
endevor. Research that has the potential to greatly expand human horizons. With
so much looking inword, and almost no looking outword I worry about stagnation.

I have never doubted that somewhere there is extraterrestrial intelligence.
Whether or not we find them with this search is not really the point.
The fact that we are looking is the key. I do believe that we should be sending
messages as well, and not just be spying in the darkness. There are potential
risks to being found by others, but the gains, both in perspective and technology
are huge. How does the mind set of people fighting over religious nuances get
effected by the existance of an entirely different intelligent race? One could
only hope for an improvement. :>)
