I think it is ludicrous to say that there is not ET life, sentient or not. Needless to say, if there is no sentient ET life, we will probably never find it. However, if there is sentient ET life, I do not believe that we will make contact/discover it for a substantial amount of time (because of the ammount of time it takes light to reach earth).
