Profile: Julian Blom

Personal background
Base in London (UK) I am a 36 year old New Media developer specialising in all manner of interactive media for Museums and Galleries. In the past I have been involved in a broad range of new media developments from web developments, Interactive TV, kiosks etc. My interests are in developing interactive experiences, interfaces and content which assume no pre-knowledge of any subject area and attempt to encompass any level of interest and technical ability. With the key property being that nothing I work on makes people using the end product feel 'stupid'. (lots of technology and interfaces tend to achieve this result with real ease:-))

My interests cover more or less everything in life from history/archaeology to philosophy, movies (of all types...I have a bit of a thing for martial arts movies at the moment...a whole new aesthetic;-)), all manner of literature and music too. Life is a pretty interesting thing too...

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that extraterrestrial or alien life almost certainly exists, though whether we will be able to recognise it if it is there is debatable. I'm sure that there are already existing lifeforms out there in the universe which we simply just don't have the senses or technology to perceive yet. So like all things, as our sensing technologies and the philosophies and understanding of the physical universe change we may get there...and ultimately find some form of extraterrestrial life.

As to whether or not this will be good or bad, benign or dangerous, I suspect it is unreasonable for us to assume that any extraterrestrial lifeform will think of the universe in terms that exactly mirror ours...so we will only be able to measure this kind of thing on the basis or direct experience when it happens.

Certainly I don't think that any of the movies or literature about contact with extraterrestrials does us any favours by the way they assume the human race will respond to such contact. I look forward to seeing what happens...
