| I am 21 years old and live in the Ohio Valley. I am currently a student at UK. I am a private pilot and I love to travel. I have been to 37 different countries in the past 3 years. I am currently planning to travel to Greece for the Olympics. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

It is hard to fathom that we are alone in a universe that stretches billions of lightyears. It is almost scary to think, what if this tiny speck of light we call our solar system, is the only place that supports life in this giant void we call the universe. There has to be life out there somewhere, but the only question is where ?? I believe it will be a few hundred years before we know if there are planets that can support life and before we actually find any intelligent life. We just don't have the technology to make aggressive scans of the sky. We would need enough radio telescopes to scan the entire sky 10 times a year before we could even begin to scratch the surface on the search for life.
Transmitting a beacon for others to find has a host of possibilites and risks. If we ever did something along those lines, we should send images of what humans look like, geography of our planet, information on our history, weather patterns and all the notable accomplishments we have achieved. Maybe someone out there will hear us.
It is also my belief that whomever we find will hold the key to intergalatic travel. Possibly a faster mode of transportation. If you truly open the mind, you can not deny the possibility that space travel beyond the speed of light does exsist. But we can't be sure if we never make contact with another race to contrast and compare our theories against theirs (which would probably be correct if they traveled to this planet). Who are we to say no to any of these possibilities ??? They are infinite, regardless how absurd some may seem.That is where SETI@Home comes in.
I run SETI@Home because I believe that there is life out there and that we can and should make contact. Whomever we find may open hundreds of new doors for mankind. Assuming whomever we find is not hostile, the benefits far outweigh the consequences. |
