Personal background
hi! i found setiathome immediately after i got connected to the web in early 2001. i've always wanted to know more about this organisation, and not because of the movie "Contact". i had often read newspaper and magazine articles about seti and the important and interesting work that's being done.

i am very glad to be a part of the work and exploration/discovery that seti does, and hope that my contribution, in some small way, advances that work.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
i believe that we are not alone. although there may not be definitive proof yet that we have been visited because any evidence such as crop circles or carvings is either debunked, ancient or is relegated and delegated to the x-files of countless government agencies, i do believe that some day, some way, an official and undisputable "first contact" will take place, which will forever change the lives of every human being on earth.

a type of beacon would not be a bad idea, although some might say it's inviting trouble, or at the least too expensive. i suppose music would be a good thing to broadcast to other worlds as well as good-will messages in every known language.

one initial benefit of contact would be the comfort of knowing that other beings or life-forms exist and could potentially benefit our own lives and planet with their knowledge and science.

a danger would also be that because we humans seem to be so arrogant, taking things for granted - we are users, not givers, but takers - we could automatically take too much of an offensive stance and give other beings a reason and opportunity to destroy us if they are capable. who needs another enemy?

people like george orwell, isaac asimov and gene roddenberry have very vivid imaginations, and i believe that some, if not all of their imaginings have or can come true. there is a lot we don't know, but people like these and their views should be taken seriously.
